General contractors will hire artisan contractors to perform some or all of the work. There are two “types” of General Contractors (GC). The first one will sub out 100% of the work, insurance companies call this type of GC a paper GC. When it comes to insurance many insurance companies will not look at covering a GC subs out all the work. The reason is around the subcontractor exposure. The second is your traditional GC. The traditional GC will have some direct employees and only sub out a portion (30%) of the work based on skill, appetite, or code work. Your agent will ask what is your annual sub costs to position you with the correct insurance company based on the sub work percentage. This will help reduce any surprises and audit time.
